Space Based Solar Power
Previously considered economically non-viable, CASSIOPeiA’s outstanding specific power, when combined with upcoming low-cost reusable launch and minimal energy storage requirement (24/365 delivery), challenges the extreme cost of grid-scale storage necessary as terrestrial wind, solar and other intermittent renewables continue to grow.
CASSIOPeiA (Constant Aperture, Solid-State, Integrated, Orbital Phased Array) can be launched onto various orbits to collect sunlight and efficiently convert it to a safe beam of microwaves, directed to a terrestrial rectifying antenna ('Rectenna'), feeding into the local power grid.
Status Comment / Notes
Space-based Solar Power activities are possibly under Space Energy Initiative or Space Solar.
