Quantum Computers

Use space environment to isolate quantum computers from the environmental disturbances so that atoms could stay longer in the quantum state.

Status

Moving quantum computers to space has been proposed in response to Michio Kaku ideas, but unclear whether it would be helpful in practice.

Applications

  • Practical quantum computing.
  • Fastest computers in existence.

Why & Solution

While atoms can store an enormous quantity of information, the most minute impurity, vibration, or disturbance could ruin a calculation. It is necessary, but notoriously difficult, to totally isolate the atoms from the outside world. They must reach a state of what is called “coherence,” in which they vibrate in unison. But the slightest interference—say, someone sneezing in the next building—could cause the atoms to vibrate randomly and independently of one another. “Decoherence” is one of the biggest problems we face in the development of quantum computers.1

Earthly Solution Risk

Exists, but building practical quantum computers in general is much more important and this technology will come for sure.
