Lunar Outpost has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Made In Space Europe (MIS EU), a subsidiary of Redwire. The MOU covers mission development leveraging the combined robotics systems of Lunar Outpost and MIS EU that could enable new and exciting applications for robotics systems on the lunar surface and beyond. The MOU details intent to develop a cooperative mission planned for 2023, with follow on missions planned for 2024 and 2025. 

Lunar Outpost is supporting Nokia’s LTE/4G NASA Tipping Point project with Intuitive Machines, a leader in cutting-edge technologies for space, to build, integrate and test the first-ever LTE/4G network on the surface of the Moon. One of the primary objectives of the Nokia technology demonstration is to validate that Nokia’s LTE/4G technology can support proximity communications for lunar operations and future human spaceflight, as well as to begin building important infrastructure that will enable rapid growth in the cislunar economy.

MIT will have two payloads aboard Lunar Outpost’s Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform rover to launch in 2023.

Lunar Outpost’s technologies have both Earth and space applications, providing “mobility as a service” on the Moon to companies, researchers, governments, and universities. Its modular autonomous rovers and service-based business model drastically lower the cost to explore space, build interplanetary infrastructure, and harvest the vast resources of space. A joint Lunar Outpost and Colorado School of Mines team, dubbed the Ice Diggers, is one of the winners of Phase 2 Level 1 of the NASA Break The Ice Challenge! The team is building a prototype of the lunar excavation system for a 15-day durability demonstration test to excavate 12 tons of simulated lunar regolith.

Lunar Outpost will be joining the Lockheed Martin team for the development of a human-rated lunar rover for NASA's Artemis program.

Stargate Ground System Software, an all-encompassing mission control software for robotic vehicle operation, data management, and payload operations. Stargate not only allows humans to operate the robotic systems through teleoperation but allows humans to task robotic systems with complex autonomous functions.

Lunar Outpost, Inc. has delivered its first flight model rover, the Lunar Vertex Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform (MAPP), to the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, for integration and final testing.

During Lunar Voyage 1, the wheels will serve a dual purpose, efficiently collecting regolith as MAPP navigates the lunar surface to complete the sale of regolith to NASA, marking the first sale of space resources in history.

HL-MAPP

HL-MAPP (Heavy-Lift MAPP), is 300 kg of pure force, designed to provide mobility services to a wide variety of science, instruments, and commercial payloads while covering vast distances on the lunar surface.

MOXIE

MOXIE is humanity’s first ever successful demonstration of how space resources can be used to fuel further exploration in space and sustain human life on another planet.

As part of a team led by NASA and MIT, Lunar Outpost plays an integral role in this ground-breaking project through: 

  • Assistance with design of MOXIE mechanical and electrical subsystems.
  • Development of the MOXIE calibration and characterization plan.
  • Contribution to the models used to simulate potential experimental runs.
  • Assistance in design of the parameter set points operational runs on Mars.
  • Support of MOXIE operations and service in the Payload UpLink (PUL) role to prepare MOXIE commands to send to Perseverance.
  • Support for future experiment planning and design.

Australia’s First Lunar Rover

Two teams are currently competing to build Australia’s first lunar vehicle for a planned 2026 mission: AROSE and the EPE & Lunar Outpost Oceania Consortium (ELO2.)

In March 2023, it was announced that the AROSE and ELO2 consortiums had been picked for Stage 1 of the project to build Australia’s first lunar rover. Each was awarded $4 million by the Australian Space Agency to design and develop the semi-autonomous rover, with the winner delivering the system under stage 2.

A second challenge has been announced by marketplace Freelancer.com and ELO2 to design a mechanical sampling arm for the rover – the ELO2 Big Dipper Lunar Regolith Acquisition Challenge.
