JAXA is conducting research on adding a retrieval function to the space station transfer vehicle "Kounotori" (HTV).
The HTV with recovery function (HTV-R) aims to achieve the following two goals by maximizing the use and development of KOUNOTORI.
- Demonstration and establishment of safe return and recovery technology, which is indispensable technology for Japan's future manned space activities.
- From the perspective of securing means of resupply and recovery in the International Space Station ( ISS ) program, ground recovery of ISS utilization results and on-orbit equipment.
Another important significance is the promotion of the domestic space industry and the passing on of technology to engineers who will lead the next generation through the promotion of new technology development programs.
