Extremophiles are organisms on Earth with unique features for survival, and these organisms we are researching to stress the importance of using them in science. Thus, we would like to introduce you to the novelty of bonding EXTREMOPHILES with innovative solutions both not only on Earth but also in Space exploration.
'Space Volcanic Algae' experiment is flying to the International Space Station.
- The experiment will investigate the ability of extremophilic volcanic microalgae to survive and adapt in space conditions toward future space missions and applications in closed-loop systems and space medicine.
- The project will be implemented thanks to cooperation with the European Space Agency - ESA, POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency, and Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.
- A key partner in implementing an experiment on the ISS is the ICE Cubes Service.
- The “Space Volcanic Algae” payload will be hosted inside our ICE Cubes Facility in Columbus, on a mission to cultivate and characterize oxygen production, the genetic and metabolic adaptations of two types of microalgae strains.
